Down time tests

Two things I have been plagued by in my glaze life; Getting a nice melt rutile purple, and getting a red with some texture on it. Often I will call this texture “Tooth” on a glaze. Because the Holiday seasons is coming soon I decided to take a month of doing only glaze tests with my base to find that perfect rutile melt. Here are my results.

All tests are done with my clear base that can be found on my glazy profile here.

First test
Donte's Base +

  • 6% rutile,

  • 3% Lithium,

  • 2/4% manganese dioxide (first test 2%( pic 1) then 4% (pic 2))

Personally I like the first test tile much better

  • For the third pic I added 2% titanium dioxide just to see what it can do (pic 3)

The way I do my tests are is usually by adding things to each tests until I feel it’s too much. So I

Third test: Dontes’ base+

  • 10% R.I.O + 1% Titanium Dioxide (pic 4)

  • 15% R.I.O + 1% Titanium Dioxide (pic 5)

  • 15% R.I.O + 3% Titanium Dioxide (pic 6 I like this one)

  • Pic 7 is just the back of pic 6

Truth be told I was kind of looking for a glaze for an upcoming mug trade with Lindsey M Dillon as i know she enjoys glazes that have depth and aren’t so clear. I think this will do fine if a hold was put on it. for the next test I will take this test tile (the one in the last picture) and put a 40 min hold at 1800 degrees F to help the texture develop a little.
